NEW Lightroom April 2023 Update - AI Noise Reduction (and more)!
Both of these videos have been so helpful in setting up my NAS. Most recently I've come back to this video to setup my SSD's and I am curious about one thing. Now when I dump media (I'm a filmmaker and manage a lot of media, also new to NAS) I am noticing that the files are greyed out. Not all but many tend to be greyed out. I can still access to media from the finder or within Premiere. I assumed this meant that the files are being stored on one of the SSD's giving me faster speed but would eventually move on to the spinning drives. Is that how that is supposed to work? Also, I imagine the SSD will fill up relatively quickly if this is the case. Then what? How do I remove media from the SSD but keep the same system in place? For instance is it possible to set the SSD to move the oldest media off of the SSD and on to the main drives once it is full, making room for new media?
Forest, you are an excellent teacher. I learn so much from your videos, every time. Thanks!
Zack

Wow
29:20 You should say that to Sony in particular because the GoPro Hero 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 all use Sony image sensors. But I get why you're calling out to professional camera manufacturers. They all should have perfect 1:1 square image sensors give you total flexibility in how photos and videos are used in post-production. Personally I think that even phones and tablets should have perfect square image sensors. Not just action cameras and professional cameras
love you bro,i was really struggling, Thanks
I loved everything about RMSP! Summer Intensive 2023 is my hands-down highlight. Such an amazing experience. In addition to advancing my knowledge & skills, I left feeling part of a big photography family. When I contacted you for help with a Lightroom issue, you were quick to respond and solve my problem. Thank you Forest! It further cemented that sense of family. The school may have closed, but the RMSP family marches on. Thank you for everything! Staying tuned for your next venture. Whatever evolves, I know it will be great.
aside from night time, is there a time you should avoid using HDR mode?
I am new to all this and just got a GoPro 12 and Hohem Steady Pro 4. Worked long and hard to set both up following many RUclips tutorials - but yours is the best: you are a great instructor and so easy to follow and understand. So much so I will be going thru it again and again. I am 76 and love to go around my seaside town of Bournemouth with a camera fixed to my mobility scooter. Thanks to you, others and my latest kit I look forward to filming more. x
PS - Have you got another link for my Gimble?
Even at 1/8000 at f2.0 during mid day, you’ll have blown highlights. I have had to switch the aperture to f9.0 to keep the highlights from getting blown out. Also, what do you do with WB? I find that on sunny days, especially, on a baseball field, soccer field, etc. I get too much color cast. Trying to get the WB correct in camera as PP takes too Long.
lol why did your clip look so terrible and glitchy?
It would be hard to narrow down to one favorite memory! My mom and I attended a photo weekend in Cleveland around 2013 which was awesome to do together. I made lifelong friends at Summer Intensive in 2021 and again at Professional Intensive in 2023-24. And I achieved one of my bucket list items when I got to photograph owls one afternoon with Neil this spring. Thank you for everything rmsp! I know you will all continue to do amazing things.
Is there no longer a plug-in in Lightroom to Facebook or Instagram?
i have go pro 12 but i suggest use your phone , i think go pro is built for video not for photo, not really good image
Thankyou so much great video.J
You mentioned if someone had another 'problem' to post about it here. Well here goes: Holding the camera - for all the decades I've been shooting I never could get used to holding a camera the way I see almost everyone holding one with the left hand underneath the lens. It's not comfortable for my left hand and it interferes with getting smooth operation of the zoom ring or focus ring if I'm going manual focus. I hold it with my left hand thumb underneath the lens with the rest of the hand on the left side of the lens.
I still don’t understand how the mechanical shutter avoids the rolling shutter.. if the curtains are still exposing just a slit of the sensor, isnt it similar to electronic?
Good, thanks! I understand RAID1 means if a drive fails, it can be quickly replaced, then replicated. However, I've also read horror stories of how, if it is the box's controller that fails, and if data is encrypted, then data cannot be retrieved even if disks were working. So my question is - does this box do automatic encryption? Or is it an option we can turn on and off? I used to think encrypt everything was a good idea. After reading 4 such horror stories, I'm rethinking that, because non-retrieval is as bad as total loss. Relatively few things need encryption - passwords, financials - they can be handled in special way and quadruple guarded!
Great Tutorial..! Thank you very much...
Lets see the same idea from Walmart, just need a bigger budget.
Ok, tried as many times and ways I can think of..........cannot figure out how to get the intervalometer to have a "Long" setting for 1/6 or any other fraction of a second which is what my camera says I need for 9 stops ND & F16 for clouds on a sunny day. Does that mean it is unusable below 1 second, and I will have to use a lot more ND filters to get a time-lapse? Everything I see says to use 8-15 seconds interval for slow moving clouds, and I can't get enough ND on the front of the camera to set the exposure to between 4 and 8 seconds. Struggling here to get close to the 180 rule!
Thanks. Perfect and to the point!
Would this be the best way to create a local storage backup of my Lightroom Cloud photos that maintains the many Folders and Albums I created in Lightroom? I want to not only protect against Adobe's servers crashing, but also anticipate the possibility that my kids (who will inherit my photo collection) might not want to maintain a Lightroom Cloud subscription when I'm gone. Thanks!
My man still giving replies to every comment 🫡
I got you!
❤
It was a very informative video. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm shooting with a 60D I bought last year. I'm happy with it 😊
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Forest, Thanks so much for a great review. I've clicked the link to purchase the Benro Polaris Astro Edition 3-Axis Smart Tripod Head. Hope you get credit. I really appreciate you mentioning shooting the Zenith. This is good to know and will keep a watch on this. Would you recommend buying the tripod you mentioned? I have a Nikon Z 7ii camera. Do I need a separate memory card for the Benro Polaris?
RMSP will be greatly missed! You all have been awesome! My introduction to RMSP was through Doug Johnson at a 2017 Coast of Maine workshop. My photography skills were advanced so much through that workshop. Since then, what RMSP done with its workshop, videos, and RUclips are unsurpassed. Thank you for all you have done in promoting and educating us about photography!
Thank you for sharing David!
appreciate your channel! sorry to hear the school is closing.
It supports 64mg memory and I have 4 16tb hdd!
Great crisp informative video. I wanna do pretty long exposure photography at day time, like those artistic ones. However, I don't know whether there would be an overwhelming amount of thermal noise there and if so, how do I deal with them?
I have the opposite question. If I've since deleted image files off my hard drive, is there a way to tell Lightroom to remove them from it's libraries and collections?
Yep! You can just right-click on any folder and select "Remove" to remove anything that's missing.
@@forestchaput do you mean an individual Collection in LRC? I've tried that and don't see the option. Did you mean somewhere else in LRC?
My One RS 1-inch overheats everytime when I get to around 18mins on 6k30, I can't trust it for video as I was using it for random social locations doing podcast interviews. Sent to repair and still does it, and this is indoors. The top dual-lens seems to get the hottest, and when sending into repair they replace the "core" brain piece that the microSD card goes into. My "core" has been replaced two times now. I say it works, but have to babysit the device and keep a watch that it's still on and recording, or you'll loose professionally planned footage from overheating. Now this item is discontinued.
Hmm. I'm sorry to hear that!
Thank you for the excellent explanation. What about dynamic range? Is there a difference in image quality?
Nope, there shouldn't be any difference in image quality or dynamic range. Great question.
seems you can't change the compression on shopify stores, what a pain
Darn!
I've always kept my IS off if shooting at 1000thsec upwards. I'll trial to see if I get different results with it on. great vid, lots of information.
Thank you!
Leave IS off. You are correct.
Appreciate this informative video...thanks for taking us photography veterans back to metering basics! Many thanks!
You're welcome!
When shooting raw, white balance has no effect
True, except for the preview on the back of the camera and the default edit in your editing program.
Found your channel during covid and enjoy all your videos. Especially astro ones!
Thank you! There will be a new astro video launching this weekend 🔭
My first was the 550D which i still have. My first full frame DSLR was the 5DII which I loved so much I want to buy another one
Nice!
Is intervalometer compatible with d3400?
I don't think so unfortunately.
Excellent! Very clear and concise.
Glad it was helpful!
I was privileged to attend three workshops at RMSP. The highlight was a week with Zack Arias. I will treasure the memories.
Awesome! Zach was a wonderful instructor.
Finally! An easy to understand, straight to the point, good quality sounding explainer about this product. Thank you! I've liked and subscribed 👍👌👏
Thanks for sharing!
your face is soft but your shirt is sharp ;)
Thanks! 🤣
Love this! I agree with your belief that each image needs to be adjusted individually.
Thanks!
So many things I loved about RMSP, but if I had to pick one, I guess I really enjoyed print lab. Also learning about studio lighting! And also how to run a business! All of it together was the perfect mix, the full package. I will never regret making the decision to take a hiatus from my day job to go to RMSP. One of the best decisions I ever made. 💜
Thanks for sharing Carin!
